memorial day weekend 2018: west coast volkswagen road trip, round two.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-21.jpg

i plum forgot i had a bunch of fun photos from our road trip over memorial day weekend!

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-6.jpg

this is our 5th annual road trip that we've taken over memorial day weekend, and the 4th one in our volkswagen bus! we've been really trying to make it out to glacier national park in montana, but the end of may still has some funky weather and snow there.

so this time we just went down the coast like we've done once before. we didn't have any stops or camp spots planned out ahead of time, which always ends up being the best experience, in my opinion. just pull over when you see somethin' you like.

that's myyy motto.

and iiiiii like ice cream.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-3.jpg

this tillamook mudslide extravaganza really set the tone for me on this trip haha.

i. was. so. happy.

& i daydream of this very ice cream cone often.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-7.jpg

pelican brewing in pacific city.

we loved it! you can stick your toes in the sand and have a brew while you wait for your table. and its right on the beach.

we were reeeeeally digging the oregon coast this time. glad we spent most of this day pit stopping all along the coast.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-12.jpg
MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-15.jpg

it's sooo freaking expansive. just beach for miles. so cool.

we turned off onto a random campground we noticed on the ocean side of the highway, and they had 2 sites left. yahoooo. sold! to us.

it was tillicum beach campground and it was perfecto. right above the beach.

lovely morning coffee beach walk and then we pressed on south.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-19.jpg

never pass up an opportunity to take a photo of the chedd in front of anything cute.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-22.jpg

almost entering caaaaaaalifornia.  this looks very hawaii to me!

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-20.jpg
MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-24.jpg

perdy beach flowers and almost to our final destination of arcata, california to visit brother phil.

^ the bread section at the food co-op made me chuckle. baker sick. no bread for you.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-31.jpg

after spending some time with phil in arcata and eureka, we camped near boonville so that we could hit up anderson valley brewing the next day before our journey home.

doesn't the cheddar bus look so cutes in the morning forest light? :) this photo was featured on real simple magazine's instagram, too.

MDW2018 Roadtrip-QuinnsPlace-28.jpg

northern california is preeeeeeetttyyyyyyyyyyy. such beautiful landscapes.

we made it to anderson valley brewing for our last stop before our long journey back to seattle. we love it there so much and wish we could have sat out on their back patio all day!

it was hotttttttttttttt on our drive north on I-5. we were losin it. the bus had no problems, but it was getting hot hot hot with a hot breeze on top. we eventually stopped in ashland, oregon late that night for food. i liked ashland a lot from what i saw! seemed real charming to me even in the dark lol. they love their shakespeare, that's for sure.

i really loved these five free days with no agenda, tootin' down the highway in the chedd, our cassette tapes blasting, exploring that west coast best coast!

previous memorial day weekend roadtrips:

(apparently the first one that we took in my car was labor day weekend, but i haven't seen these pics in soo long and they're cute...way back from my photo dump blogging days with no writing whatsoever, lol. & crater lake is incredible!)

palm springs.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-13.jpg

i am lucky to have grandparents who live in a beautiful, relaxing and warm climate that's just a quick plane ride away.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-2.jpg

i am also lucky to have my grandparents.

they are truly THE cutest. they are 91 and still so in love with each other. they start to miss one another when they are in separate rooms. they are so good to one another and can also be sassy with a sense of humor. i love watching them together. this june is their 70th wedding anniversary. omgomgomg. i love them so much.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-24.jpg

pete and i just went down there for 5 days to visit my g-parents, spend some quality time in the sunshine, and also see our friendzies for the weekend.

^ mt. rainier always so majestic from the plane.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-3.jpg

the grapefruit trees at my grandparents' place were brimming with these monster grapefruits! we plucked em off each afternoon for the next morning's breakfast. they smell incredible right off the tree. and they're HUGE and so juicy.

my granny used to have grapefruit halves set out in the morning when my family would be down there visiting - and she'd always pre-cut around the little wedges so it was easy to eat. what a sweet dear. it's the most pleasant time there in the morning. sitting out on the front patio with fresh grapefruit & coffee, the view of the desert mountains, palm trees, birds chirping, and the smell of all the warm flowers. all the feels.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-11.jpg
Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-12.jpg
Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-10.jpg

it was super hot. about 105 degrees each afternoon. none of the elders even wanna go outside in these temps, so we had the pools all to ourselves the entire time.

desert beauties.

^ early birds at arrive. avo toast and mimosas by the pool, don't mind if i do!

pool boyz & margaritas. so fun to lounge around with marisa & foster on a saturday morn.

we had a fun & funny cinco de mayo!!!! so happy to have this arrangement with our pals who live in LA now and they've been driving over to the desert the last couple times we've been in palm springs. love ya maris & fos!

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-6.jpg

^ grapefruit pluckin' time.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-22.jpg

^ this one goes out to my girl A.Jo.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-4.jpg

^ night moves.

we did an early morning hike at tahquitz canyon that was pretty quick and fun. there was a pretty little waterfall oasis at the end.

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-21.jpg

Palm Springs-QuinnsPlace-9.jpg

always a glorious chill time spent in the desert. when you're laying poolside staring up at palm trees with a HOT breeze over your bod, its quiet, the birds are chirping and you can smell the desert flowers, you've hit peak relaxation.

be back, p.s.!

new york city.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-27.jpg

we spent the final leg of our fantastic europe-christmas-birthday-new-years trip in one of my favorite places, new york city.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-42.jpg

we arrived the day before the BOMB CYCLONE SNOWSTORM hit, lol. this worked out perfectly for us because we were intentionally trying to be there during this time and we were stoked to experience a true new york city snow day. for most other people trying to get OUT of nyc at this time... not so perfect.

thanks, universe, for lining up our timing like that.  besides those 8 degree temps the days after the snow, we were having an absolute ball!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-19.jpg

now i knew for suuure that autumn in new york is charming as hell..... but fresh snow?! stop.

heart eyes for days.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-21.jpg

before i get into our stay in new york, I HAVE TO ADDRESS one of the greatest sort of accidental things that's ever happened to us in our lives......................

(^ that's pete playing video games! and you can play two-player with your seat mate!)

we purchased business class tickets for the flight legs from dusseldorf > london and london > nyc, assuming it was going to be like coach with a few more inches of leg room. we used double the miles for these tickets just to treat ourselves a little bit for the long flight to the u.s., and also to avoid a 24-48 hour layover that was the only coach ticket option.....

little did we know that "business class" on a transatlantic british airways flight means

i looked at my ticket at the terminal at heathrow and noticed "club world" on it. i remembered on the flight to london that "club world" was the swanky section up front with the lay-down chairs in little private pods....... my eyeballs were now bursting out of my head. pete had gone to the bathroom so i was just sitting there alone dodging my head around all shifty & crazy-like in total surprise.  "WHO, ME?? US??? WE?? IN CLUB WORRRRLD?!?? could it beeeee??"

needless to say we have never flown in pod seating before this and WE HAD THE TIME OF OUR DAMN LIVES.

i obviously took pictures of everything because we were pooping our pants with joy the entire 7+ hours. also the plane was broken for 2 hours at the gate before take-off.  pete and i were stoked to be stuck here for extra long!

luckily there was a couple in the next pod over who had never flown like this before either - so we were all snap-happy dweebs together.

first you find your seat and it has a big pillow and a package with a fresh sheet, thin blanket and big comforter inside. you squeal with glee. you sit down and push all of the buttons and slide the divider between you and your seat mate up and down and laugh hysterically in utter triumph. then the wonderful attendant comes over and gives you a glass of champagne (in a real glass) and a cute leather satchel with an eye mask, socks, lotion, toothpaste & toothbrush, essential oils, lip balm, and a pen! you furiously remove your shoes and put on the new socks and prop your feet up! you take 6-10 selfies with your seat mate. shortly after the champagne preamble, the attendant brings a cocktail and a bowl of warm nuts. you browse through all the movie & television offerings and lay your bed back alllllllllllll the way - because you can! you continue to be amazed and completely excited out of your mind for the remainder of the flight.

just look at this boy! sooo pleased. everything came in real glassware, real plates & bowls and cutlery. the simplest things were just thrilling to us.

we had appetizers of butternut squash soup & rolls and a tomato mozzarella basil situation. also, always three drinks happening at a time - water, wine, and gin & tonic. we were livin it UP up in da sky.

we both had the steak & gnocchi for dinner and some delish chocolate mousse cake thing for dessert. i've already watched the big sick and legally blonde by this point. truly living my best life.

^ oh shit it's "tea time"! you can take the people out of london but can't take london out da people. tea time was sandwiches, eclairs, and rolls with jam & butter. and more alcohol! i'm probably watching thelma & louise now. suchhhhh a good movie.

all that to say.....i cannot wait to fly in pod life again. best flight ever. ever, i say!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-15.jpg

the first morning after we arrived in the city was when the snow just started to fall. everything was looking christmassy still and oh so cute.

bubby's for breakfast! the vibes on this particular morning at bubby's were sooo excellent. we got there right as it opened so it was not crowded yet, and they were playing the best jazzy new yorky breakfast jams. just me and my boo and my fluffy blueberry pancakes & coffee as the snow falls outside. i was so happy.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-18.jpg
NYC January-QuinnsPlace-20.jpg

we rode the subway up to central park because we figured it was a must-see during a snow day.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-23.jpg

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-25.jpg

we ducked in to a couple restaurants to defrost here & there and to watch the snow come down. it was coooooold and super windy. i forget what this place was called, but it was a meat shoppe of sorts. they had cool meat-stuff wallpaper in the bathroom.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-29.jpg

mcsorley's was our favorite part of our time in nyc. pete had been there before with his friends so he knew we had to go back. i loved it so much. it's one of the oldest bars in new york city and it used to be a boys club. i think women weren't allowed in until the 1970s or so.

you either order "dark" or "light" beer and they give you two of each...not sure why, that's just how it works. they have a limited menu, but we opted for the classic mcsorley's cheese plate, which is literally a sleeve of saltine crackers, a pile of sharp white cheddar cheese & raw onions, and hot mustard. the whole experience just makes you feel like you've gone back in time. i loved ittttttt.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-33.jpg

everyone was so nice - we made friends with all the tables around us and we stayed for hours!

be good or be gone.

loved mcsorley's on this snowy day!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-35.jpg

pete hadn't been to the top of the rock yet, so we did that first thing in the morning the day after the snow storm. by then, the snow was all stacked in tall dirty piles on the side of the road, the sky was blue, and the temperature dropped to the coldest i've ever experienced before.

my phone completely died several times when i'd pull it out of my pocket to take a photo. just instantly froze. so cold. kudos to all you new yorkers who survive these seasons, because that was crazy. when we got back to seattle where it was 45 degrees, we were like dang... so warm!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-34.jpg

^ we think this was the best ramen we've ever had. we stumbled upon this place, zundo-ya, and wanted it so badly because we were starting to feel sick and we were literally frozen. it really hit the spot. so so delicious.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-39.jpg

we spent the next couple days walking all around the city, mostly trying to keep our blood moving and staying on the sunny side of the street, haha. the sun was truly a life saver in 8 degree weather.

my nose and my knee caps were frozen! i am not surprised so many people are running around in those ridiculously long sleeping bag jackets. they're actually necessary!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-40.jpg

we walked the brooklyn bridge and had pizza in brooklyn at juliana's. i've heard many a high recommendation for this place, and while it was pretty good food, good service, and good ambiance, the pizza was not as top notch as i was anticipating. something about the cheeeeese.

tacombi in the west village. good drinks & good tacos.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-46.jpg

it was pretty hard to be outside for too long, and we weren't in love with our airbnb, so we went to a lot of restaurants & bars, which was fine by me!! i was happy we were close to lafayette, a restaurant i loved when i came with my friend whitney. it is such a cozy nice place and they have perfect old fashioneds. we had a couple old fashioned and a plate of warm olives to sooth our cold souls.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-47.jpg

took pete to the butcher's daughter, because i am a creature of habit and also because it was the most reasonable and closest breakfast place to where we were staying. still cute as ever in there. my waffle with strawberry butter was lovely!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-53.jpg

last food stop on our journey - katz's deli! always a fun new york city experience and crazy good food. that potato salad - i am very into it.

^ headed home. such an awesome european adventure and so many very special memories!

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-56.jpg

^ two weary travellers 16 days later. my boots got super messed up from the salted streets and the snow (which comes out scrubbing with vinegar & water, by the way!).

did i mention two small carry-ons are all we brought for our entire trip? pretty proud of us.

NYC January-QuinnsPlace-59.jpg

^ this photo of pete makes me all warm & fuzzy inside. number one travel buddy for life.
